Her own stories have been praised for their lyrical prose, nuanced characters, and ability to transport readers to new and unexpected worlds. Based in Denver, Colorado, Susan is surrounded by a vibrant community of writers and storytellers, fueling her creative spirit.

We invited Susan to share her insights on the evolving landscape of romance publishing and discussed how AI tools and technologies shape the way we write, publish, and consume romance novels.

How does the adoption of Artificial Intelligence [AI] tools shape your publishing processes, from manuscript selection to market analysis, and what implications does this have for authors?

We haven't used AI for manuscript selection or marketing analysis. Our editors choose the projects they want to contract and work on. We want to publish books that we love. It's possible that at some future point, there will be an AI feature where the editors can specify what they love, but that doesn't exist yet as far as we know.

We do use AI to assist with metadata, however, and we also use AI to assist with one proofing pass.

The implication for authors remains to be seen.

At this moment, humans are still required to write novels. There are AI author assistant tools, but AI can't write books by themselves that maintain structure and all the elements of fiction writing. We are in wait-and-see mode for that.

How has the rise of digital publishing and self-publishing impacted your approach to finding and nurturing new talent?

It hasn't impacted us much upfront. We continue to review manuscripts submitted to us by authors (both previously published and new). The issue is that the volume of books published each year makes it more and more difficult to get books in front of readers. There is more competition for their attention.

In your experience, what key elements make a romance novel successful in today's market?

Romance readers have trope expectations, and so our editors do their best to maintain the trope structure while ensuring a fresh new twist, good writing, and a HEA [happily ever after].

What marketing strategies do you find most effective for promoting romance titles today?

In our opinion, word of mouth is always the best strategy for voracious romance readers. Meanwhile, we do marketing on Amazon primarily and let the algorithm find the readers based on our metadata. We find this has been the best way to let readers see our titles.

How do you balance catering to long-time romance readers’ expectations and attracting new audiences?

Since we are a very small press, we strive for quality over quantity and lean toward what has worked traditionally rather than what might work potentially. We just don't have staff for that. We do look for fresh, new-writing always. We hope that by publishing books we love, readers will love them too.
